While restaurants and cafés continue to mushroom across our cities and most weekends are spent deciding which one to dine at, here's a look at what you can do to ensure your tummy doesn't feel as guilty as the wallet!

So hungry you could faint?

Most of us make the mistake of starving ourselves before going out to eat at a restaurant. If you're gracious enough to help your tummy to some fruit or salad before heading out, chances are you would order less at the restaurant. This way you can ensure you're eating less of calorie-rich food and at the same time, don’t have to forego the fancy meal at the restaurant.

Online menus!

The internet was created for everyone - and the weight watchers and nutrition freaks need to look no further. Most restaurants have their menu cards posted online and all you need to do is browse through it in detail so you make an informed pick on the way. This way you don’t have to keep everyone at the table waiting while you are calculating the calories in your head.

Grilled, not fried

Since restaurants have a kitchen that's always up and running, you can always ask your chef to grill the meat or vegetables instead of frying it. For them, it's just a matter of choosing one equipment over the other.

H20, on the rocks

Always opt for water as your drink while dining out. Although to some this might seem like a kill joy, it is worthwhile to remember that most fancy drinks at restaurants come with heavy sugary additives - the worst possible way to end your weekly diet.

Size up the appetizers

Some restaurants are more famous for the appetizers. In this case, you can order more of the appetizers which often contain less oil and calories than main course dishes. Try some baked potatoes, grilled seafood on skewers or something sautéed.

Don't be fooled by the long descriptions on menu cards. A well known, fancy restaurant may be serving just about the same nutrition value as the local fast food joint. Dining out is to be enjoyed to the fullest whenever possible, so don't let it weigh you down in any way.
